Coarse and match fishing essentials

What coarse and match fishing tackle do I need?
Pick your method first. A pole or whip is the simplest way to fish close in, a float rod suits waggler fishing further out, and a feeder rod lets you fish a groundbait feeder at range. Pair a rod with a 3000 size reel and the right line, then add hooks, floats or feeders, split shot and a disgorger. A seatbox or chair, a landing net, a keepnet and a bait box or 2 cover the rest. For a match, bring groundbait and a catapult to keep fish feeding in your swim.

Coarse and match fishing questions
What do I need to start coarse fishing?
A whip or a float rod with a 3000 size reel, line, hooks, floats, split shot, a disgorger and some bait. A landing net and something to sit on make the day easier.
Should I start with a pole or a rod and reel?
A whip or short pole is the easiest start, with no casting and very direct bite detection. A rod and reel lets you fish further out and suits rivers and big lakes.
What's the difference between coarse and match fishing?
Match fishing is coarse fishing as a competition, where anglers draw pegs and the heaviest net wins. It uses the same tackle, with more focus on poles, feeders and fast-feeding groundbait.
Do I need a fishing licence?
Yes. In England and Wales anyone aged 13 or over needs a rod fishing licence from the Environment Agency to fish freshwater. Licences for 13 to 16 year olds are free.
Can I see coarse tackle before I buy?
Yes, much of our range is in the shop in Burgess Hill, open Monday to Saturday.
