Predator fishing essentials
What predator fishing tackle do I need?
For lure fishing you need a spinning rod that casts around 7 to 35g, a fixed spool reel and braid. The HTO Hooligan Lure Rod is 2.7m, casts 7 to 35g and costs £49.99. Load the reel with Westin W6 8-braid and you’re ready for Fox Rage Slick Shads or Westin Shadteez.
Pike have sharp teeth, so use a wire trace every time. E-SOX 7 Strand Pike Wire comes in 24lb, and E-SOX Crimping Pliers let you make your own traces.
For deadbaiting you’ll want a float like the E-SOX Piker or the Fox Rage HD Slim Slider, some ready-made bait traces and a drop-back indicator such as the Fox Rage Predator Swinger MK2 on a bankstick.

Predator fishing questions
Do I need a wire trace for pike?
Yes. Pike teeth cut through braid and mono, so put wire between your line and the lure or bait every time. E-SOX Super Trace and E-SOX 7 Strand Pike Wire are both in stock.
What rod should I use for lure fishing?
A rod casting about 7 to 35g covers most perch and zander lures and smaller pike lures. The HTO Hooligan (2.7m, 7 to 35g) and the Shimano Yasei BB Aspius (270MH, 10 to 35g) both fit.
Braid or mono for predator fishing?
Most lure anglers use braid because it doesn’t stretch, so you feel every knock. Westin W6 8-braid comes on 135m spools. Add a Westin W6 ST5 fluorocarbon leader for perch, and use wire for pike.
What's a good setup for a beginner?
The Kinetic Zathar Spin Rod and Reel Combo is £64.99 and comes with a 2000 reel. There’s also a telescopic version for £59.99 that packs down small. Add a pack of Fox Rage Loaded Slick Shads and a wire trace and you’re set.
Can I buy predator tackle in the shop?
Yes. We’re at Southdown Store, Cuckfield Road, Burgess Hill, RH15 8RE, open Monday to Friday 8am to 5:30pm and Saturday 8am to 12:30pm.
