What sea fishing tackle do I need?
Most UK sea anglers start with a beach rod, a fixed spool or multiplier reel, mono mainline and a shock leader. Then comes the terminal tackle: leads, swivels, links, hooks, beads and rigs. The rig depends on the fish. A 2 hook flapper suits flounder and plaice in estuaries, a pulley dropper holds bigger baits for ray and cod, and a fixed ledger with a long snood is a standard bass rig. Feathers catch mackerel from piers and boats through the summer. Bass anglers fishing lures use metals like the HTO Pathfinder, soft plastics like the Axia Mighty Minnow, and surface lures like the Xorus Popchinko.

Sea fishing questions
What rig should I use for bass from the beach?
A fixed ledger with a long snood is the standard bass rig. The Cox and Rawle Bass Rig is tied this way on a 4/0 hook. Bait it with crab, sandeel or squid and fish close in, where bass feed in the surf.
What size lead do I need for beach fishing?
Most beach anglers use leads of 4 to 6oz. Go heavier, or use a grip lead, in strong tide or rough surf. Plain pyramid leads like the Tronix Pyramid Pro hold well on sand in calmer water.
What do I need to catch mackerel?
A string of feathers such as Tronix Hokkai, a 3 to 4oz lead and a rod that can cast it. Mackerel shoal along the south coast from late spring to early autumn.
Do I need a shock leader?
Yes, when casting leads of 4oz or more. The leader takes the force of the cast so the mainline doesn’t snap and send the lead flying. The usual rule is 10lb of leader for every 1oz of lead.
Can I buy sea fishing tackle in store?
Yes. The shop is at Southdown Store, Cuckfield Road, Burgess Hill, West Sussex, RH15 8RE. It’s open Monday to Friday 8am to 5:30pm and Saturday 8am to 12:30pm, closed Sundays and bank holidays. Visit the shop.
