What carp fishing tackle do I need?
Start with 2 rods, matching reels and bite alarms. Most carp anglers fish 2 rods on a rod pod or bank sticks, with a free spool reel like a Shimano Baitrunner so a running fish can take line. To look after the fish you need a landing net, an unhooking mat and a weigh sling. Staying overnight means a bivvy or brolly, a bedchair, a head torch and something to cook on. Then sort your end tackle: hooks, hooklink, leads, and a few pre-tied rigs if you’d rather not tie your own.

Carp fishing questions
What do I need to start carp fishing?
2 rods with free spool reels, bite alarms, a rod pod or bank sticks, a landing net, an unhooking mat and some end tackle. A chair and a brolly make a day session far more comfortable.
What length carp rod should I buy?
12ft with a 3lb to 3.5lb test curve suits most UK lakes. A 10ft rod is easier on small waters, in tight swims and when you travel light.
Do I need an unhooking mat?
Yes. Many fisheries won’t let you fish without one, and it protects the carp when it’s out of the water.
What is a free spool reel?
It lets a carp take line with the bail arm closed, so the rod isn’t pulled in. Turning the handle puts the reel back into normal drag.
Can I see carp tackle before I buy?
Yes, much of our range is in the shop in Burgess Hill, open Monday to Saturday.
